“Welcome once again to the weird world of Merrill Garbus’ tUnE-yArDs.” – Pitchfork
“Nikki Nack establishes Garbus as a cunning, effervescent queen of pop” – The Music
tUnE-yArDs will headline Melbourne’s Howler on Thursday July 24 & Friday July 25 and Sydney’s Oxford Art Factory on Monday July 28 alongside her appearance at Splendour In The Grass. D.D. Dumbo, whose single ‘Tropical Oceans’ has served as a sublime anthem to summer, will perform as special guest to both shows.
A patchwork of sounds and textures – from avant-pop to R&B, soul, folk and Afro – Merill Garbus’ explosive performance style and the always-surprising ways in which her songs unfold are front and center at tUnE-yArDs’ thrilling live shows.
Succeeding 2011’s w h o k i l l , a record that featured prominently on year-end lists and even topped the Village Voice’s prestigious Pazz & Jop poll, tUnE-yArDs’ third album Nikki Nack is joyously fearsome. From the slow burning soul of ‘Wait For A Minute’ to the junkyard groove and playground chants of single ‘Water Fountain’, its innumerable sonic influences were honed with producers Malay (Frank Ocean, Alicia Keys, Big Boi) and John Hill (Rihanna, M.I.A.).
Veering from lullaby-quiet to ferociousness within the minute, tUnE-yArDs’ euphoric shows mix lo-fi and hi-fi, digital and physical – Merill, her longtime collaborator Nate Brenner and their band building each song from the ground up with a musical arsenal of loops, pedals, drums, percussion and saxophone that are played with great vigor. Write The Guardian of the acclaimed performances, “the experience is DIY, communal and a celebration. Being hard to pin down has rarely been so much fun.”
Following a summer tour of w h o k i l l in 2012 which took in Sydney Festival and Melbourne’s Sugar Mountain, tUnE-yArDs make a welcomed return to Australia with the newly released Nikki Nack and ever evolving live show for which they’re world renowned.
